Dorothy Jane Sievers, aged 97, of Vincennes, IN passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on the 28th of October, 2024. Born on the 13th of June, 1927, to Joseph and Edna Schlomer in the same town she would spend her entire life creating a legacy of love and dedication. Dorothy was a beacon of faith and compassion who lived a life brimming with joy and purpose.
A cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Dorothy was the matriarch of a large family that stood as a testament to her capacity for love. She was the beloved wife to the late Syrill Sievers, with whom she shared 55 years of marriage, and the adored mother to Catherine Chanley, Francis Sievers (Danette), Della Bergauff (Larry), and Sarah Deckard (Dwight). Her spirit will fondly be remembered by her eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. She is survived also by her sister Mary Ruth Barmes, brother Cletus Schlomer (Gayle), and a host of nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Syrill, siblings: C.E., George, James B., William L., Harold Paul, Ralph, and Tom Schlomer, sisters Cecilia Yochum, Sister Mary Daniel, Helen Bennett, and Rosina Madison, her sons-in-law Tim Carie and David Chanley, and grandson Keith Carie.
After graduating from high school, Dorothy’s life was marked by a legacy of hard work and community involvement. She married Syrill on the 8th of May, 1948, and together they became well-known figures in the community. Dorothy’s industrious nature led her to work at Brown Shoe Factory, the Tip Top Creamery, and, alongside her husband, own and operate Sievers Grocery Store for two decades. Later in life, they owned the S&S Tavern, where her wisdom and warm nature were well received by all.
Dorothy’s interests were as rich and varied as her life. She was a devout member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Parish, giving her time and heart to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Red Hat Society. She found joy in playing cards, Bingo and her daily Lucky game at Gentlecare and was known for her good fortune. Above all, Dorothy’s passion for traveling allowed her to embrace the world with open arms.
Those who knew Dorothy would forever describe her as faith-filled, loving, and wise. She navigated life with a deep sense of conviction and an endless reservoir of kindness. Her guidance was sought by many, and her laughter and loving nature cultivated an atmosphere where her family and friends always felt at home.
