Janice “BeDell” Downen, age 86, of Ocala, Florida, passed away on January 3, 2025. Born on December 15, 1938, in Knox County, Indiana, to Edward Lawrence and Irma Trotter DeBell, Janice carried the warmth of her childhood throughout her life and spread it generously to everyone she met.
Janice graduated from Lincoln High School in 1965, where she cultivated many friendships that she joyously maintained through regular class reunions and homecomings. A lover of community and camaraderie, she worked at Stubnitz Springs Factory in Vincennes, Indiana, before relocating to Florida in 1981, a move inspired by her aversion to the cold. Janice retired from a fulfilling career at Winn-Dixie in Silver Springs, FL, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and kind-heartedness that was felt by colleagues and customers alike.
Eagles conventions and Stubnitz Factory Reunions were just a couple of the gatherings that Janice relished, illustrating her appreciation for connection and shared histories. Proudly serving as Madam President of the Eagles, she demonstrated exemplary leadership with a gentle touch, bringing joy and enthusiasm to the role.
Janice’s passion for Euchre and entertaining ensured that her home was a hub of laughter and warmth, echoing with the sounds of cherished family reunions. Her fondness for people was unmistakable, and her door always stood open to friends old and new.
Janice’s legacy is lovingly carried on by her children, Monica Powell (Butch) of Wheatland, IN, LuElla Harmon (Dave) of Vincennes, IN, Cathy Mercer (Joe) of Plainfield, IN, and Chris LaCoste of North Carolina; her brother, Charlie Mains of Vincennes, IN; her twelve grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; and a beloved group of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her life was enriched and then tenderly remembered by these individuals who were her pride and joy.
She was preceded in departure by her parents, siblings Dale “Sonny” DeBell, Lawrence DeBell, Loretta Menke, her daughter Lynda K. LaCoste, and her adored Yorkie, Tyson. Janice’s kindness and friendliness will resonate in the hearts of those who knew her, serving as a guiding light and a reminder of the joy to be found in togetherness and celebration. Her memory will be treasured as deeply as she treasured those around her, a beloved soul who truly embodied the spirit of family and friendship.
There will be a celebration of life on May 3, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Abundant New Life Church, 19853 State Route 33 E., Westport, IL, with services officiated by her granddaughter, Amber Evans.
