The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to use extreme caution around frozen ponds and lakes.
The sheriff’s office reminds you that ice must be at least four inches thick to support a person’s weight.
All ice should be considered too thin unless properly tested by a responsible adult.
Ice formed over flowing water, such as rivers or creeks, is never as thick as pond or lake ice.
It also develops air pockets which can be especially dangerous.
Remember when the sun comes out or the temperature fluctuates, ice quickly thaws. If you see slush anywhere, it’s a clear warning to stay off the ice.
