William “Bill” Denzil Claycomb 87, of Vincennes, IN, passed away April 19th, surrounded by his entire family. He was born on May 11, 1937, in Beale, IN, to Denzil and Stella May (Chatman) Claycomb.
Bill was a man of quiet strength, unwavering dedication, and deep love for his family. He was the second of eight children. After the early loss of his father, Bill put his own dreams on hold and left school in the 9th grade to care for his younger siblings-a testament to the selflessness and responsibility that defined his life. He began his career as a mechanic with I&S McDaniel, but soon ventured out on his own, founding Prestige Auto in refurbished I&S main office building located at 1102 Prairie Street, in 1978. Through hard work and perseverance, he grew the business into a respected local institution, eventually relocating to South 6th Street Road and continues to be a thriving business to this day.
Racing became another of Bill’s great passions, and he found joy leading a racing team with his brother Dan, and later his sons, Kevin and JR behind the wheel. Together, the Claycomb family became a beloved presence in the dirt track racing world, with many wins and even a national championship to their name. Bill was married for 65 years to the love of his life, Barbara, and found immense pride and happiness in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whether under the hood of a car, trackside with his family, or tending to his perfectly kept yard, Bill lived a life of purpose, loyalty, and love.
Preceding him in death were his parents, 3 sisters and a great granddaughter. Bill is survived by his wife, Barbara, his two sons, Kevin and wife Shelly, JR and his wife Sara. Grandchildren Nicholas (Kendra), Alexa (Jacob) Vaughn, Blake (Kobi), Cameron, Ethan, Owen and Ella Kixmiller, along with 6 great grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Dan (Merna), Rita, Pam (Wayne), and Vickie (Dick).
