For the 23rd year, the Vincennes City and Vincennes Township fire departments joined together to hang a flag over the Hart Street exit of U-S 41. The flag is a reminder of over three-thousand people who lost their lives in the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. It also honors those who died deterring another attack; their plane crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
David McCormick was one of the firemen at the memorial scehe. He says the memorial is held remembering the exact times the planes struck the Twin Towers. Several vehicles– both on Hart Street and on U-S 41 under the Hart Street Bridge– honked in recognition of the remembrance. McCormick is glad even 24 years after the tragedy, people still remember.
The flag remembrance for the victims of 9/11 started one year after the attack– on September 11th, 2002. It has been a traditional remembrance for the two fire departments every year since.
